Quest commentary & awareness6

Discerning the Transmundane

Focused Serana commentary covering Septimus, Hermaeus Mora, forbidden knowledge, and the risks of Daedric bargains.

The Taste of Death

A consequence-heavy pass with distinct reactions to opposing the cult and an intense fallout-and-reconciliation route if the player joins the feast.

Ill Met By Moonlight

Commentary focused on Hircine, Sinding, predation, and the tension between curse and choice.

The Break of Dawn

Vampire- and post-cure-aware reactions to Meridia, Kilkreath Temple, and Dawnbreaker.

Waking Nightmare

Commentary on Vaermina, the Miasma, memory and psychological control, and the player’s decision regarding Erandur and the Skull of Corruption.

House of Horrors aftermath

A post-quest conversation in which Serana processes Molag Bal’s influence and the player’s choices in Markarth.

Selected quest moments also have Ashe 1.4 and/or Serana–Ashe banter material. Check those separate changelogs for scope and Open Beta availability.

Romance, feeding & vampirism3
  • An optional, romance-gated feeding feature that is repeatable and centered on consent and relationship dialogue.
  • A cure-foreshadowing conversation and a softer post-cure reflection about warmth, food, vulnerability, and human needs. The post-cure scene is tied to previously accepting and unlocking the feeding feature.
  • Expanded awareness for a Dragonborn turned through the Dawnguard path, including a stronger first reaction, thirst advice, clicked hellos, and combat taunts.

A small Ashe-aware variant belongs to the separate Ashe/Serana integration content.

Radiant dialogue & follower quality-of-life4
  • More neutral-toned sneak dialogue, including whispering hellos and goodbyes.
  • Additional trading responses.
  • A top-level sandbox/roam option so Serana can interact with her surroundings instead of remaining fixed in place.
  • Location-aware sandbox responses and follow-me responses when sandbox/roam behavior ends.

Serana–Ashe banter, romance compatibility, main-quest banter, and shared Daedric material remain in the separate integration changelog. Serana–Aniya interactions are not part of the main SDA 4.4 build. They were delegated to Aniya author Kenerad and are intended to be distributed through the Aniya side; current availability in Aniya has not yet been confirmed.

Player guide

How to trigger the new SDA 4.4 content

These instructions cover only player-accessible Serana content in SDA 4.4. Automatic scenes are identified below; otherwise, look for a new top-level topic when speaking to Serana.

Quest commentary & awareness6

Discerning the Transmundane

How to trigger

  1. After Septimus gives you the Lexicon, speak to Serana and select the new top-level topic.
  2. When the quest resumes at level 15 or higher, speak to Serana again after Hermaeus Mora appears in Septimus Signus’s Outpost.
  3. After receiving the list of blood samples to collect, select Serana’s new topic.
  4. After Septimus turns to ash and Mora speaks to you again, Serana will approach automatically while you are still in the outpost.

The Taste of Death

How to trigger

  1. Keep Serana with you during the quest. If you kill Eola in the Hall of the Dead, remain in the crypt for Serana’s reaction. If you agree to help Eola, Serana will approach after Eola leaves.
  2. Serana has two one-time comments while you clear Reachcliff Cave.
  3. When Eola asks you to bring Brother Verulus to the shrine, Serana will stop you for a conversation.
  4. If you turn on the cultists at the feast, finish the fight; Serana will force-greet you for the good-path debrief.
  5. If you eat Brother Verulus, Serana confronts you automatically and leaves the party. Recruit her again at her assigned home to see the reconciliation.

Ill Met by Moonlight

How to trigger

  1. After speaking to Sinding and receiving Hircine’s Ring, select Serana’s new top-level topic.
  2. Inside Bloated Man’s Grotto, Serana will approach before you reach Sinding, around the dead and dying hunters.
  3. After leaving the grotto and speaking to Hircine’s Aspect for the final time, select the post-quest debrief. It changes according to whether you killed or spared Sinding.

The Break of Dawn

How to trigger

  1. Loot Meridia’s Beacon. After Meridia speaks, Serana will react automatically.
  2. Place the beacon and complete Meridia’s sky conversation. Once you return to the ground, select Serana’s new top-level topic.
  3. Serana’s temple comments play automatically while you explore Kilkreath and fight the corrupted shades.
  4. After defeating Malkoran and receiving Dawnbreaker, select the post-quest topic. The dialogue accounts for whether Serana is still a vampire or has been cured.

Waking Nightmare

How to trigger

  1. Begin the quest and agree to follow Erandur. While you are still in Dawnstar and before entering Nightcaller Temple, select Serana’s new top-level topic.
  2. Approach Nightcaller Temple’s main doors with Erandur; Serana will approach automatically.
  3. After completing the quest and leaving the temple, select Serana’s post-quest topic. The conversation reflects your choice concerning Erandur and the Skull of Corruption.

House of Horrors aftermath

How to trigger

  1. Complete Dragon Rising and The House of Horrors through either the vanilla outcome or the House of Horrors: Quest Expansion alternative.
  2. Enter an inn or player home with Serana, then select the new top-level dialogue topic.
Romance, feeding & vampirism4

Feeding introduction and repeatable feeding

How to trigger

  1. You must have accepted Serana’s post–Soul Cairn romance confession, and Serana must still be a vampire.
  2. The one-time introduction can begin anywhere; being out of combat is recommended. Accepting her offer unlocks the feeding feature.
  3. Afterward, speak to Serana and choose “I’d like you to feed on me” whenever you want to repeat it. There is no private-home requirement or 24-hour cooldown.
  4. The message “Serana is parched and needs to feed” indicates that the feature is active.

Cure foreshadowing

How to trigger

Complete the Dawnguard main quest while Serana is still a vampire. Serana will greet you automatically for this one-time conversation.

Post-cure reflection

How to trigger

  1. Accept and unlock the feeding feature before Serana is cured; completing an actual feeding is not required.
  2. After Serana has been cured, enter any inn. A soup-or-stew objective appears automatically.
  3. Obtain any vanilla soup or stew, then speak to Serana and offer it to her. Mod-added soups and stews are not supported in SDA 4.4.

Dawnguard-path player vampirism awareness

How to trigger

  1. Side with the Dawnguard and have Serana turn you before entering the Soul Cairn.
  2. Complete the Soul Cairn portion of the questline. Once you are out of combat, Serana will greet you automatically; there is no additional delay.
  3. Further clicked greetings and combat lines become available as your friendship develops, provided both you and Serana remain vampires.
Radiant dialogue & follower quality-of-life2

Sneak and trading dialogue

How to trigger

Speak to Serana while sneaking to hear the new whispered hellos and goodbyes. Use her normal trading dialogue to hear the additional trading responses.

Sandbox / roam

How to trigger

  1. Select the new top-level option “Take some time for yourself.” Serana will wander and interact with her surroundings, with responses that can vary by location.
  2. Use the follow-me dialogue when you want her to stop roaming and resume following normally.

Technical

Bug fixes & improvements

Completed and tested fixes & improvements14
  • Added backend detection support for Sweets and Such. This does not add full commentary, dialogue, or awareness content.
  • Polished the triggers for Alucard custom conversation #04 / the birthday request.
  • Corrected subtitle typos in the Alucard birthday conversation.
  • Added safer location-change handling to prevent errors when a destination location has not resolved yet, including during fast travel and Skyrim Wayshrines transitions.
  • Added re-entry protection and a short in-game cooldown to the Apocalypse spell scan so repeated location events cannot stack duplicate scans.
  • Reworked outfit management for more reliable Home, Town/City, and Adventure switching, including safeguards for invalid entries, duplicate or stale armor, empty custom outfits, mounted travel, and unnecessary repeat redressing.
  • Corrected the Tanner custom-name audio mismatch where the subtitle said “Tanner” but the recorded line said “Vandar.”
  • Corrected player-name-specific Prophet dialogue issues affecting the Tony and Sovrina custom names.
  • Prevented Serana from being affected by Dawnbreaker and other turn-undead effects.
  • Fixed an issue that could prevent Serana’s romance confession from triggering after the Soul Cairn.
  • Moved the Custom Patreon Dialogue enable/disable option to a more discoverable location in the dialogue menu.
  • Regenerated the SEQ file.
  • Removed identical-to-master records (ITMs) and undeleted-and-disabled references (UDRs).
  • Updated the SDA Patch Hub to 2.9.9-EA with the House of Horrors: Quest Expansion integration patch update required for SDA 4.4.

Open Beta

Known & not-yet-tackled issues

Open issue list18
  • Shorten two near-limit English dialogue lines currently measuring 254 and 253 characters.
  • Investigate false follower-count blocks that can prevent Serana from following even when the relevant state variables appear clear.
  • The Patch Hub amulet FOMOD may install the wrong BHUNP/CBBE option, and required textures may be missing.
  • The Autumngate awareness patch has version-dependent dialogue and home-outfit behavior.
  • Mirele Bismath Reborn location commentary may not trigger.
  • Duplicate custom-name entries remain under investigation.
  • The Serana marriage storyline may encounter a black screen.
  • Reactive hellos and intense-moment hello cooldowns both need condition review.
  • The animated hood fix may equip or unequip Serana’s hood in the wrong state.
  • Some vampire-route dialogue can still call the player a “vampire hunter” or “vampire killer” despite not joining the Dawnguard.
  • Spell Toggle Extended v2 can report a taught spell as enabled without applying the state.
  • Serana can repeatedly mistake unrelated locations for Raven Rock.
  • A sunlight-related line can play during the evening.
  • The sleep/shut-eye feature may fail to recognize valid beds.
  • Serana may fail to move to an assigned home after dismissal.
  • Legacy adult-framework options and support messaging need a support-matrix audit.
  • Supported OStim and SFW paths need a reliability audit for scene-end timing, queued comments, and manual exits.
  • Selected dialogue stacks still need a RandomInfo priority audit.

  • Devour integration: Install Devour alongside SDA.
  • Blood and OStim integration: Install Blood and OStim alongside SDA.
  • Ashe and Serana banter in SDA 4.4 Work in progress: Requires the Ashe and Serana Banter Patch 1.2 and Ashe 1.4. These WIP files are separate from the main SDA archive.
Compatibility & integrationsComing soon

SDA is getting more SkyPatcher integrations, including support for detecting soups and stews from the following mods:

  • Beyond Skyrim
  • Official Fishing Add-On
  • Complete Alchemy and Cooking Overhaul

This support is for Serana's post-cure mini-quest, which includes an objective to find her a stew.

PC installation & update instructions3 steps
  1. Download SDA 4.4.0-EAv1.5 SE from the free, public Patreon release post and install it through your mod manager. No Patreon account or paid membership is required. If you are updating from an earlier Early Access or Open Beta build, completely replace or overwrite the old plugin and files when prompted.
  2. Install SDA Patch Hub 2.9.9-EA. If you use House of Horrors: Quest Expansion, install the updated House of Horrors integration patch from this archive; this patch was updated for SDA 4.4.
  3. This update is designed to work with existing saves, but updating a current playthrough carries some risk. SDA 4.4 has undergone extensive testing. If you encounter an update issue that appears specific to an existing save, report it through the SDA 4.4 Open Beta feedback and bug report form.
Bethesda.net & Xbox installation instructions5 steps
  1. Open the free, public Patreon post titled "Serana Dialogue Add-On 4.4 Open Beta." No Patreon account or paid membership is required.
  2. Use the Bethesda.net & Xbox Open Beta download link in that post to open the exclusive Bethesda.net listing.
  3. Add the Creation to your library, or choose Update if you already installed an earlier Early Access or Open Beta build.
  4. Make sure the Creation is enabled and loaded in your load order. Bethesda.net and Xbox users should update the entire mod rather than install a separate update plugin.
  5. When the final SDA 4.4 release becomes available, remove the Open Beta build and install the final release. It should continue to work with your existing save.

Previous public release

SDA 4.3 public release changelog

This is the full changelog for the most recent public SDA release preceding Version 4.4, covering versions 4.3.0 through 4.3.2. It is reproduced from the official SDA Nexus changelog.

Version 4.3.2Latest 4.3
  • Intimacy Timing Fixes
  • Updated SDA’s post-kiss/post-lovemaking comment handling.
  • Previous fixes for early OStim comments were incomplete and may not have worked for all users.
  • SFW/fade-to-black behavior is unchanged, aside from compatibility updates for the new shared fragment flow.
  • OStim users must also update the SDA Patch Hub FOMOD and install the OStim Standalone Patch to get the actual OStim fixes.
  • Update Notes
  • SDA only: update SDA.
  • SDA + OStim: update SDA and the Patch Hub OStim Standalone Patch.
  • SDA + Ashe + Banter Patch: update all three.
  • SDA + Ashe + Banter Patch + OStim: update all three plus the Patch Hub OStim Standalone Patch.
Version 4.3.1
  • 4.3.1
  • Fixes / Improvements
  • As of April 2, 2026, new saves are not currently required for this update. This guidance may change in the future.
  • Fixed an issue where the new carry weight condition update was not applied to two dialogue lines.
  • Added a SkyPatcher-based bed compatibility patch.
  • Introduces a SkyPatcher config that expands SDA/Serana bed detection and interaction coverage to additional bed and furniture types without requiring an ESP/ESL.
  • Safe / no-op behavior:
  • Does nothing if SkyPatcher is not installed.
  • If any referenced EditorIDs do not exist, SkyPatcher will simply skip those entries.
  • Expanded support includes beds and furniture added by:
  • Creation Club homes / CC-defined furniture types
  • Deep Slumber
  • Dunmer Dreams
  • Rally Noble
  • Rustic Repose
  • Sleipnir Beds
  • Added additional safeguards to prevent edge cases where “Visit Valerica with Serana” and “A Date at the Bannered Mare” could fail to complete properly.
  • Subtitle fix:
  • “Regardless, let's follow this trail and see where it leads. It's the best we can do for the poor dog.”
  • → “Regardless, let's follow this trail and see where it leads. It's the best we can do for poor Barbas.”
  • Fixed a script oversight where Serana’s Home outfit check could reference the wrong outfit list. This improves reliability when assigning or falling back from Home outfits in the built-in outfit system.
  • Fixed an issue where one of Serana’s meal-giving dialogue variants did not properly add the promised stew to the player’s inventory.
  • Adjusted subtitles for Serana’s Dark Brotherhood commentary line:
  • “I would assume a lot of people on that council don't agree with where their Emperor is going, with appeasing the Thalmor and such…”
  • The trailing ellipsis has been removed so the sentence now ends normally.
  • This addresses confusion that Serana was being cut off mid-thought. Per the original script, the line is intended to end there and exit dialogue afterward.
  • Cleaned ITMs.
  • Custom Names Fixes
  • Fixed the “I love you” Daniel line using the wrong audio file.
  • Fixed a College of Winterhold commentary typo:
  • “Seak” → “Seek”
  • Sandbox / Banter Improvements
  • Merged the experimental sandbox patch into the main banter plugin.
  • Adjusted Serana’s sandbox behavior to disable random wandering while still preserving idle and sandbox marker usage.
  • This reduces cases where followers:
  • bump into the player,
  • walk in front of NPC conversations,
  • or circle each other awkwardly during banter.
  • Intimacy / Post-Scene Commentary Improvements
  • Updated the default / SFW intimacy maintenance script to improve the timing of post-kiss and post-lovemaking commentary.
  • Added support for a new banter-blocking flag to prevent Ashe and Serana banter from firing during intimacy scenes.
  • This also helps prevent banter from triggering during the immediate post-intimacy follow-up dialogue window.
  • Important Compatibility Note
  • These Serana-side changes are fully safe and functional even if Serana is used on her own.
  • However, if the Ashe and Serana Banter Patch is also installed, the matching Banter Patch update is required for the new suppression logic to work correctly.
  • If installing the Banter Patch update, also make sure the latest versions of Ashe and Serana Dialogue Add-On are installed.
  • Framework Support Note
  • The following animation framework variants are legacy versions and are no longer officially supported. As such, they do not include the latest intimacy timing fixes, banter fixes, or official support as of the current mod version:
  • Flower Girls
  • OStim (NG version)
  • SexLab
  • Support for these variants is now left to third parties.
Version 4.3.0
  • Serana Dialogue Add-On 4.3.0 — Changelog (Patch / Update)
  • Additions
  • SDA Banter + Dawnguard Awareness (Ashe × Serana)
  • Full integration pass for Dawnguard + Ashe’s questline awareness, built to feel like both characters are reacting to the same playthrough.
  • Radiant banter, including smarter/reactive-style travel conversations.
  • Joint combat banter and party combat flow improvements.
  • Romance awareness across relevant banter moments.
  • Shared content: Ashe × Serana Banter Patch
  • → 1,000+ lines of integrated content (Ashe + Serana combined).
  • This integration is huge (1,000+ lines combined), so it has its own dedicated mod page with full details, requirements, and notes—please refer to that page for the complete breakdown.
  • Important note: Due to the scope of the Ashe × Serana Banter Patch, it will not be ESL-ified.
  • Soul Hunter Awareness (requires Soul Hunter Armor)
  • Adds a new micro-conversation set that only becomes available when Serana is wearing the Soul Hunter items.
  • Trigger requirements
  • Soul Hunter Outfit Equipped (Cuirass / Light Cuirass)
  • Soul Hunter Medallion Equipped
  • Drinking Buddies
  • Added new Drinking Buddies lines for Serana (includes Ashe recognition / shared context).
  • Bugfixes / Improvements
  • Dialogue gating, cooldowns, and reliability
  • Added IsInScene == 0 conditions where needed.
  • Added 24-hour cooldowns to all combat detection and taunt dialogue to reduce repetition and give combat banters space to trigger.
  • Corrected all dialogue conditions using GetRandomPercent so probabilities now match intended behavior (banter frequency behaves as designed).
  • Updated condition checks for overencumbrance to be more reliable and compatible with carry weight mods.
  • Added a 24-hour cooldown to dropped-item dialogue (prevents Serana commenting every time you drop something).
  • Made Serana hello dialogue conditions less restrictive (previous heavy gating caused “hello” to get suppressed across long quest stretches; pacing is now handled more through cooldowns and improved logic).
  • Naming / custom conversation fixes
  • Fixed dialogue conditions for custom name Alucard (v4.2).
  • Fixed Sovrina name dialogue:
  • One line was missing conditions and could appear for everyone.
  • Another was incorrectly linked to a global variable.
  • Fixed Brandon name using the wrong voice file for an “I love you” line.
  • Fixed Amad name conversation triggers.
  • Fixed Serana saying “I love you Bjorn” leading to the wrong voice file.
  • Renamed “Disable Custom Patreon Dialogue” option → Custom Conversations (clearer and matches current intent).
  • Specific line fixes / tuning
  • Fixed condition for one of Serana’s “Good evening” lines.
  • Fixed condition for:
  • “Did you know this place was once a bustling hub for traders? Hard to imagine it now.”
  • Added additional conditions so “cooking a meal” dialogue doesn’t trigger too early (now gated better behind friendship progress).
  • Fixed an unvoiced line caused by a faulty TopicInfo hash link:
  • “It was all true… You, a stranger, have done more for me since we met than either of my parents in more than a thousand years.”
  • Daegon compatibility
  • Daegon banter: removed more references to Kaeserius to improve backwards compatibility with Daegon Legacy 1.0 and align with the original design intent for Daegon–Serana banter.
  • Serana hello cooldown tuning (all presets)
  • Serana was coming across as too chatty at multiple progression stages, and this has been recurring player feedback (including older feedback forms), so baseline pacing has been slowed down across the board.
  • New real-time cooldowns (not in-game time):
  • More chatty: 180 seconds
  • Default: 360 seconds
  • Less chatty: 720 seconds
  • These values may be tuned further in future bugfix updates based on continued feedback.
  • Added Ashe Banter ESP check to SDA mod checker. If Ashe installed but Ashe and Serana banter is not installed tell the user to install it.
  • Note on deferred content (not included in v4.3):
  • SDA 4.3 focuses on the Soul Hunter awareness addition and a large bugfix/reliability pass. Several larger content items are planned for future updates and were not part of this release, including expanded Civil War awareness (both sides + outcomes), additional companion banter packs (e.g., Squelch+Celine, Aniya, Kaidan II revoice/integration), deeper Serana lore conversations (First Era life, Vampire Lord reluctance), date-sensitive holiday commentary, additional Daedric quest reactions, and broader miscellaneous radiant tweaks/awareness expansions.
